Job description

Reporting to the Construction Manager, the Deputy Construction Manager is responsible for:
  • Supporting Construction Project Managers so that all construction- related aspects of every Property project are effectively taken care of.
  • Supporting and guiding the Construction Project Managers in fulfilling their responsibilities, including clarifying as necessary all IKEA requirements as set out in the relevant IKEA manuals, standards and guidelines.
  • Overall project follow-ups.
  • Providing support to the project development phase of the project in matters of technical and construction costs.
  • Preparing and following up project budget estimates and time schedules for investment approval purposes.
  • Managing the detailed architectural and engineering design of projects in accordance with IKEA standards, manuals and guidelines.
  • Managing the obtaining of all necessary permits to enable the construction of projects to begin.
  • Managing the procurement of all external consultants, suppliers and contractors in accordance with established IKEA routines.
  • Managing all external and internal counterparts to ensure project construction is executed correctly to satisfy the project requirements of site safety, quality, time and budget.
  • Controlling all aspects of project construction costs.
  • Ensuring the satisfactory hand-over of completed areas for retail build-up.
Ensuring satisfactory commissioning, testing, training and the hand-over of technical and building systems to the building facilities staff, including the provision of all necessary documentation.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Academic degree in civil engineering preferred
  • Construction projects within the retail sector
  • Academic degree in engineering or equivalent working experience
  • Several years of experience at management level in consultancy and/or contracting
  • Previous experience of contract negotiations
  • Ability to communicate confidently and clearly in English
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Microsoft Project.
  • The local construction market.
  • Procurement and contractual issues.
  • Technical and engineering matters, with the confidence to challenge designers.
  • Cost management.
  • Time schedule management.
  • Quality of design and workmanship.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Good decision-making ability.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Good ability to plan and organise.
